Spanish Language and Latin Cultural EventsGuillermo Kuitca Exhibit Walker Art Center features more than 75 works from contemporary Argentinean painter Guillermo Kuitca this summer in “Everything—Paintings and Works on Paper, 1980-2008.” The exhibition showcases key themes in the artist’s work over the past three decades, including maps and systems used to organize, navigate and describe the world. Many of Kuitca’s paintings incorporate three-dimensional and sculptural elements.
Latin American Small Plates Dazzle guests at your next summer event with new appetizers and tapas authentic to Latin America. Chef Amalia Moreno-Damgaard cooks up tostones con chilito, Salvadorian pupusas con curtido, empanadas de picadillo, Guatemalan pinchos churrasco, Colombian arepas and fresas con crema. $70; reservations required.
“Noches de Verano” Dance Performance Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater presents “Noches de Verano” (Nights of Summer), a performance featuring three generations of flamenco dancers from across the country in their unique interpretations of the symbolism and power of womanhood. Master flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes and cantador singer Oscar Valero accompany the trio. Tickets are $28.
Salsa del Soul Get ready to cha cha, merengue, salsa and more when Salsa del Soul, an eight-piece orchestra that plays dance music from the Spanish-speaking regions of the Caribbean, performs an outdoor concert as part of the Mill City Live summer music series. Tickets $5.
Vintage Band Music Festival For four days, more than twenty bands from around the world will perform in fifty concerts that celebrate cultural heritage through music. Many ensembles will dress in traditional costumes. Los Estrellas de Guadalupe, a mariachi band from St. Paul, are among the musicians showcased. Indoor and outdoor locations across Northfield. Free.
Mi Terra Mariachi Concert As part of its Nine Nights of Music series, the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul hosts the powerful eight-piece mariachi group Mi Terra for an outdoor performance. Band members hail from the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and recreate the classic music of their homeland. Tapestry Folkdance Center will provide dance instruction at the event. Bring a lawn chair. Free. (In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors.)
Heartland Tango Festival This is the third Heartland Tango Festival, and there's something for everyone! Highlights include 22 Argentine tango classes, 6 master teachers, 11 guest instructors, a dinner/dance show with sizzling Argentine tango performances, live music, and a crime caper tango film. Previous Heartland festivals have drawn about 250 dancers and non-dancers from all over. Tickets $10-$225. (Prices vary, based on what you want to attend.)
Los Hombres Calientes A high-powered brass septet featuring Irvin Mayfield and Bill Summers tours the Caribbean, Brazil, Africa and New Orleans for an evening of world and jazz-inspired music. Tickets $22-$50.
Tapas and Paella Chef Daniel Darvell goes on a culinary tour of Spain with festive tapas and paellas. Sample gazpacho, tapas including gambas al romesco, tortilla with serano ham, paella verde, and tarta de Santiago. $75; reservations required.
Mexican Bicentennial Celebration Mexican Consul Ana Luisa Fajer will help kick off a special celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence – one of the largest events in the midwest. Festivities include a 1 p.m. parade along East Lake Street, a variety of cultural entertainment and foods, a lowrider car show, dance contests, and events for the entire family.
Cocina Criolla: Taste of Puerto Rico Chef Annette Colon from Lucia’s brings together the unique influences of Spanish, American and African culture that make up traditional Cuban flavors. Experience rellenos de papa y surullitos de maiz con salsa criolla, tostones con camarones al ajo, pernil al horno con mojo isleno, and templeque de coco. $65; reservations required.
Evita Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical about the life of Argentina’s first lady Eva Peron comes to St. Paul. One of the most influential Latin American women of her time, the story chronicles her acting career, rise to power, charity work and eventual death.
Contra-Tiempo Dance Los Angeles-based urban dance company Contra-Tiempo energizes St. Paul with a performance of contemporary dance theater. The company is dedicated to social activism and transforming the world through dance. Their style infuses elements of salsa, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop and Latin social dancing.
Tiempo Libre Miami’s Grammy-nominated musical group Tiempo Libre perform a joyful concert of timba music, an exciting combination of Latin jazz and traditional Cuban songs. Group members are Cuban natives.
