Spanish Conversation Course

The goal of the course is to develop and improve verbal language skills. Students will discuss and express opinions, in individual presentations and as group participants, using articles and other documents as subject matter. These activities will encourage students to improve their communicative skills through the command of expressions and vocabulary enrichment.


Spanish Literature Course

Don Quixote de la Mancha
This course will present Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote de la Mancha. Discussion will be focused on its literary elements and main topics. We will also comment on a selection of critiques of this innovative masterpiece.

This course is designed for students with Advanced level of Spanish.


Business Spanish Courses

Advanced Business Spanish
This course is designed for students and professionals with an intermediate-advanced level of Spanish who need to communicate effectively in the business world. The goal of the course is to provide the linguistic tools for the students to be able to perform professional tasks, such as describing their company and their positions, hiring personnel, creating and coordinating a business event, conducting market research and launching marketing campaigns, participating in business meetings, arranging a business trip, etc.


Spanish Architectural Highlights

This cultural course of 10 hours reviews a few of the major architectural highlights in Spain and Latin America. It begins with an overview of colonial architecture in Latin America. The course then focuses on the modernist era, or turn of the 20th century, with several important architects, including Gaudi and Domenech. The final portion of the course discusses influential modern architects in both Spain and Latin America, including Bofill, Legorreta, Barragan and Calatrava.

Guillermo Kuitca Exhibit

Walker Art Center features more than 75 works from contemporary Argentinean painter Guillermo Kuitca this summer in “Everything—Paintings and Works on Paper, 1980-2008.” The exhibition showcases key themes in the artist’s work over the past three decades, including maps and systems used to organize, navigate and describe the world. Many of Kuitca’s paintings incorporate three-dimensional and sculptural elements.

“Noches de Verano” Dance Performance

Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater presents “Noches de Verano” (Nights of Summer), a performance featuring three generations of flamenco dancers from across the country in their unique interpretations of the symbolism and power of womanhood. Master flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes and cantador singer Oscar Valero accompany the trio. Tickets are $28.

 

Salsa del Soul

Get ready to cha cha, merengue, salsa and more when Salsa del Soul, an eight-piece orchestra that plays dance music from the Spanish-speaking regions of the Caribbean, performs an outdoor concert as part of the Mill City Live summer music series. Tickets $5.

 

Vintage Band Music Festival
August 5-8

For four days, more than twenty bands from around the world will perform in fifty concerts that celebrate cultural heritage through music. Many ensembles will dress in traditional costumes. Los Estrellas de Guadalupe, a mariachi band from St. Paul, are among the musicians showcased. Indoor and outdoor locations across Northfield. Free.

 

Mi Terra Mariachi Concert

As part of its Nine Nights of Music series, the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul hosts the powerful eight-piece mariachi group Mi Terra for an outdoor performance. Band members hail from the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and recreate the classic music of their homeland. Tapestry Folkdance Center will provide dance instruction at the event. Bring a lawn chair. Free. (In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors.)

 

Heartland Tango Festival

This is the third Heartland Tango Festival, and there's something for everyone! Highlights include 22 Argentine tango classes, 6 master teachers, 11 guest instructors, a dinner/dance show with sizzling Argentine tango performances, live music, and a crime caper tango film. Previous Heartland festivals have drawn about 250 dancers and non-dancers from all over. Tickets $10-$225. (Prices vary, based on what you want to attend.)

Mexican Bicentennial Celebration

Mexican Consul Ana Luisa Fajer will help kick off a special celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence – one of the largest events in the midwest. Festivities include a 1 p.m. parade along East Lake Street, a variety of cultural entertainment and foods, a lowrider car show, dance contests, and events for the entire family.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical about the life of Argentina’s first lady Eva Peron comes to St. Paul. One of the most influential Latin American women of her time, the story chronicles her acting career, rise to power, charity work and eventual death.

 

Contra-Tiempo Dance

Los Angeles-based urban dance company Contra-Tiempo energizes St. Paul with a performance of contemporary dance theater. The company is dedicated to social activism and transforming the world through dance. Their style infuses elements of salsa, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop and Latin social dancing.
